Trump to Order Commission on Fraudulent Voting in Elections

Trump to Order Commission on Fraudulent Voting in Elections

The move was immediately criticised by civil rights groups, who claimed it was a voter suppression tactic and that Mr Kobach would use his position on the commission to try to prevent minority groups from voting.

The White House said the commission will review practices that affect the integrity of federal elections-spanning improper registrations, improper voting, fraudulent registrations, fraudulent voting and voting suppression.

According to a report by ABC News, Vice President Mike Pence will be the chair and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach will be the vice chair-two men with very long histories of making it harder to vote, especially Kobach.

Sen. Patrick Leahy says that a commission assembled by President Donald Trump to investigate the integrity of USA federal elections has "zero credibility" and is being led by an "extremist" who is also a "birther". He said that no one involved has spoken with him directly about whether the commission will investigate the president's unsubstantiated allegations of widespread voter fraud during the 2016 election, but he said he expected it to be on the agenda.

Many state election officials are also anxious the commission will divert attention from other serious concerns, such as aging equipment and the threat of hacking.

President Donald Trump will make good on a promise to investigate alleged vote fraud with an executive order on Tuesday, White House officials tell NBC News. "The president's proposed commission seems to fail the credibility test".

"In other words, the idea that significant amounts of voter fraud exist is itself a fraud".

Apart from Pence and Kobach, five other members to this bipartisan commission are Connie Lawson, Secretary of State of Indiana; Bill Gardner, Secretary of State of New Hampshire; Matthew Dunlap, Secretary of State of Maine; Ken Blackwell, Former Secretary of State of OH and Christy McCormick, Commissioner, Election Assistance Commission.

Many state election officials are also anxious the commission will divert attention from other serious concerns, such as aging equipment and the threat of hacking. That means that the only way they can win is by suppressing voting rights for as many progressives as they can and that is exactly what they are setting out to do. The Kobach backed law has been challenged in court where judges have since enjoined enforcement of his anti-voter registration efforts.

Democratic Federal Election Commissioner Ellen Weintraub asked Mr. Trump in a letter to disclose evidence of his charges of voter fraud presidential election. Voter fraud, of course.

The move provoked anger among top US civil rights groups and Democratic lawmakers, who called it a voter suppression tactic.

Kobach claimed there were over 100 cases of voter fraud.
